JAIPUR: In a case of rash driving, a 24-year-old man engaged in speed check work for the Jaipur Marathon was crushed to death early on Sunday after being hit by an Audi on the Jawahar Lal Nehru Marg near Clarks Amber hotel.

Four Chennai tourists die as Kerala houseboat sinks

ALAPPUZHA: Four people perished in the Punnamada Lake on Saturday casting a shadow on the safety protocols governing the houseboat industry, Kerala tourism's main draw.

The deceased - Sudheshini (26), her daughter Elakkya (5), Rohini (37) and her daughter Susmitha (12) - were part of a 60-member team comprising staff and family members of `Hearing Aids Centre', Nungampakkam, Chennai, who had been in Alappuzha to enjoy the weekend. Eight others were also injured in the accident that took place at the Kayal Kurissadi Boat Jetty.

The accident occurred when a one-bed houseboat All Season - which was used by the tour party to board Lily Darling, the boat they had booked - overturned trapping 12 people inside its lounge area. Timely intervention of crew of other boats and local people saved lives of others while Sudheshini, Rohini and their children weren't so lucky.

The boat lost balance when the entire group moved to the same side. "Everything happened so fast. Though we could launch rescue efforts within minutes, bringing boats alongside to ferry the injured to hospitals was a daunting task given the poor infrastructure at the jetty," the driver of another boat told TOI.

The accident has once again exposed serious issues plaguing the houseboat industry which witnessed 10 deaths in the past six months. There were five incidents when fire broke out on the boat - twice while cruising, and five incidents where boats capsized. Sources said the district witnessed about 50 major and minor incidents in the past two years.

In comparison with previous mishaps, Saturday's was a freak one stemming from carelessness of the boat operator. It also pointed to poor boarding facilities in Alappuzha district where more than 1,000 houseboats ply every day.

In spite of tall promises, the district is yet to get a full-fledged facility where tourists can board and disembark from houseboats without difficulty. Though many floating jetties were launched in recent years, very few of them are afloat today.

District collector P Venugopal said the additional district magistrate will probe the incident. The bodies were taken to Chennai by road after post-mortem and other formalities.

Except for Nitha (42), one among the injured, the rest of the team proceeded to Chennai in a bus. A team of doctors is also accompanying the injured.

The accident also rattled the state government with chief minister Oommen Chandy deciding to hold a meeting of all stakeholders at Alappuzha collectorate on February 1. A decision on solatium to the dead would be decided in the next cabinet meeting.

The state government also sanctioned Rs 10 crore for renovation of the houseboat terminal in Punnamada Lake, tourism minister A P Anil Kumar said.

Gurgaon-Faridabad e-way still accident-prone, unsafe

GURGAON: Two years ago when the Gurgaon-Faridabad road was upgraded to an expressway, the residents of private posh colonies and Sikanderpur village on the road were hopeful about getting better infrastructure. But to date there are no streetlights and safety measures on the entire stretch, thus making it highly accident-prone and unsafe for commuters.

A local resident says, "The road, which has heavy traffic flow, remains completely dark throughout the night. Without traffic light and police checks, commuters also do not hesitate in driving on the wrong side of the road thus causing traffic hazard."

Despite the fact that there are several residential colonies on both sides of the road and over 10,000 people reside in the area, authorities are not paying any heed to their demands.

Raising the concern, Parimal Bardhan, president of H block residential community, says apart from heavy vehicular traffic, there is frequent pedestrian movement by schoolchildren and other people, who risk their lives every day. Even the intersection at the Qutab Plaza market, the major neighbourhood shopping place for hundreds of residents is without traffic light, he said and added that a large number of vehicles passing through the crossing makes it really dangerous for senior citizens and women to cross the road to the market.

Manoj Tripathi, a frequent commuter from the Gurgaon-Faridabad road, said after the removal of fencing from both the sides of the road by Reliance Infrastructure for expansion purposes, the residential areas have become insecure and the greenbelt is being misused by miscreants.

As a commuter, it is dangerous to travel on this road without streetlights and proper traffic management. Also, garbage is being dumped on both sides of the road due to lack of monitoring by authorities concerned.

The residents as well as the RWAs have repeatedly approached the senior officials of all authorities concerned, including PWD, HUDA and the MCG but to date no action has been taken. The authorities continue to play the blame game among themselves while Reliance Infrastructure Ltd, the concessionaire for this project, also did not respond to the residents' issues.

United India Insurance pays Rs 13 lakh compensation in road accident case

The family members of a man, who died in a road mishap due to rash driving of a tempo in which he was travelling, have been awarded a compensation of nearly Rs 13 lakh by a Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) here.

The Tribunal directed the United India Insurance Company Ltd, with which the offending vehicle was insured, to pay Rs 12,96,100 to the wife, two children and the parents of victim Shailender Kumar Mehto.

"It is prima facie proved that deceased Mehto died due to injuries suffered in the accident caused due to rash and negligent driving of respondent number 1 (tempo driver)," MACT Presiding Officer Dinesh Bhatt said.

Mehto's family members told the court that the incident took place in January this year when the victim, along with others, was travelling by the tempo for immersing the idol of Goddess Saraswati in Yamuna river near Kashmere Gate.

They said tempo driver Birender Dass took a U-turn and due to his rash and negligent driving, the vehicle overturned resulting in fatal injuries to Mehto.

The victim was taken to hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Mehto, 31, was working in a club at Model Town here and was earning Rs 10,000 at the time of the accident.

The tempo driver and owner denied any negligence on their part and said a man had suddenly jumped in front of their vehicle and in an attempt to save his life, the driver applied emergency brakes due to which the victim dell down from the tempo and received grievous injuries.

1.42 lakh people killed in road accidents in 2011: Govt study

There was an accident in every minute in 2011 in the country that claimed the lives of 1.42 lakh people, according to a government study.

The number of accidents in the previous year was 4.97 lakh injuring 5.11 lakh people, according to a report released by Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

The study attributed the high number of accidents, injuries and deaths to exposure to risk nature of traffic, lack of traffic separation, etc.

The 2011 numbers are, however, marginally lower than the 5.27 lakh accidents and 1.42 lakh deaths in 2010.

The Road Ministry has proposed new schemes for better traffic management during the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-17), including training in driving, first aid.

In a meeting of National Road Monitoring Centre (NRSC) held earlier this year, certain measures to improve road safety were discussed.

These measures are setting up of State Road Safety Councils and District Committees, Road Safety Fund at State level and setting aside 50 per cent fines collected for traffic violations for this fund.

Strict action against drunken driving and removal of liquor shops on national highways was also one of the proposed measures.

The government would also work towards enforcement of use of seat belt, developing emergency medical services by having a 24X7 call centre, with a dedicated common telephone number, road accident crash investigation, etc.

5-yr-old dies as school van jumps signal, is hit by car

A five-year-old kindergarten student of The Air Force School, Subroto Park, was killed when her private school van jumped a traffic signal and crashed into a Maruti Swift on Tuesday in Dhaula Kuan, Southwest Delhi.

The cab driver, Sumit, has been arrested and booked for rash and negligent driving, causing death by negligence and under sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Gauri Trivedi and seven other children were in the Maruti Omni, being driven by Sumit, when it jumped the traffic signal on Cariappa Marg (opposite Dhaula Kuan Metro station) at 1.35 pm, police said. According to police, Sumit does not have a permit for the school van.

Police said Sumit was speeding and did not see the Swift till the last moment. After jumping the signal, Sumit swerved left to avoid a crash, but the vehicles grazed each other. The impact pushed the van on the pavement and it fell on the left side of the road, police said.

So severe was the impact that Gauri, who was in the passenger seat next to the driver, hit the windscreen. She died on the spot due to a head injury.

Brahm Prakash, a traffic police constable posted at the junction, told police: “The Maruti Omni was traveling at a very high speed and jumped the traffic signal. A Maruti Swift hit the van, which then fell on the left side of the road. I, and other passersby, pulled the children and the van driver out of the car. We handed over the driver to police.”
