JAIPUR: In a case of rash driving, a 24-year-old man engaged in speed check work for the Jaipur Marathon was crushed to death early on Sunday after being hit by an Audi on the Jawahar Lal Nehru Marg near Clarks Amber hotel.
Police suspected that the driver of the Audi, who owns a heritage property on MD road, was in an inebriated state. He was arrested and released on bail, after almost seven hours of custody. "Prima facie he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. Thus, we had also sent him for medical examination," a police official said.
According to the cops, the accident took place at 5.30am on Sunday when the Audi vehicle hit an Innova taking a U-turn on JLN Marg. While the driver of the Innova immediately fled the scene, the drive of the luxury sedan lost control over and hit the youth sitting on the corner of the road.
"The accused, identified as Trivikram Singh, was coming from airport. Onlookers told us that the collision was so nasty that the youth got trapped under the wheels and was dragged for almost 100 metres," said Badri Lal Rao, circle inspector.
The seriously injured youth was rushed to the Sawai Man Singh (SMS) hospital where he succumbed due to multiple injuries. Police have ordered a post mortem of the youth who hails from a village in Alwar.
Soon after the accident, the Chetak vehicle parked nearby reached the spot and arrested the accused. "He remained in custody for almost 7 hours. A case under section 304-A (causing death due to negligence) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) was also been lodged against him," he added.
This is the second such incident when a person standing on the road has died in an accident in the last few days. Senior IAS officer V S Singh was killed in a road accident in Jaipur in December. Similarly, On December 15, 2008, Vijit Singh, 45-year-old grandson of late Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II was arrested, allegedly in a case of hit-and-run, in which a girl student from Kota, Babita Choudhary, was killed and three others were injured.
