Siblings in Powai bike accident rode without licence

MUMBAI: The brother-sister duo, killed on the Powai flyover when a car brushed past their bike , was driving without a valid licence.

Ashwin Pawar (23) and his sister Varsha were on the Rambaugh flyover, about 50meters from the Powai police station, when the incident occurred.

"Ashwin may have lost control over the bike after a motorist brushed past his vehicle. We didn't find a driving licence on him. The two were declared dead before we could admit them to Hiranandani hospital," said senior inspector Bajirao Bhosale.

The Pawars' uncle, Rajesh, insisted Ashwin had a licence. "It is strange that at the time of the accident he was without it. Police said it was possible the licence may have been lost or thrown away in the incident," he said.

Ashwin had gone to a Ghatkopar mall with Varsha. They were heading home around 6:30pm when the accident occurred.

The duo was thrown five feet to the left from the divider, and sustained severe head injuries. A case of rash driving and causing death by negligence has been registered against the motorist.
