Speeding car lands three teens in hospital

Mumbai: Returning from a walk in the evening proved almost fatal for three school-going girls yesterday when a speeding car crashed into them at Swatantrya Veer Savarkar Marg (Cadell Road) near Shivaji Park, Dadar.

After an evening stroll, the three victims - Smruti Narkar, 16, Kruttika Nandalaskar, 15, and Deepali Gurav, 15 - who are residents of Dadar, were returning home, when a silver Baleno crashed into them opposite Dr Antonio Da Silva Technical High School around 4.30 pm.

The incident occurred when Aadesh Vaiti, the driver of the car, tried to skip a red signal, and in the process rammed into the trio. The impact of the car was so strong that the three girls landed a few metres away from the spot and the car across the road.

"The car tried to avoid a red signal," said HT Bhoye, a traffic officer, who witnessed the accident. He added, "The three girls were crossing the road and got hit by the car." Sub-Inspector Pushpak Ingale, from the Shivaji Park police station said, "Smruti has sustained a fracture to her thigh, while Kruttika and Deepali have fractures to their hip and back," he said. When asked if Vaiti was under the influence, Ingale said that he had been sent for a medical examination and they were awaiting the results.
