Punjab Engineering College varsity campus goes vehicle free from today

CHANDIGARH: From Monday, Punjab Engineering College will have saner roads. Three roads are being made vehicle free under phase 1 of the faculty and students' traffic and parking management campaign. Temporary parking areas, one for two-wheelers and the other for cars will also be earmarked to ensure that traffic is not held up by movement of two-wheelers and cars on the same routes.

Work has been divided into three phases. In phase one, which begins on Monday, vehicle control measures will be imposed and parking spaces will be specified for two and four wheelers. Around 40 students of the deemed university, 10 faculty members and 60 maintenance, security and workshop staff have pitched in to come up with the plan to manage parking and traffic. The campaign comes in the aftermath of a fatal accident that took place on the campus last semester.

Ujjwal Kango, a student of the mechanical engineering wing said, "The death of a student recently prompted us to do things to manage the parking and traffic in the campus. With the support of the faculty and maintenance staff, we are going to launch the new system."

The parking spaces will be made permanent in the second and third phase. This will be done by paving areas, providing round the clock security, making proper lighting arrangements and introducing the token system.

"The measures will be implemented gradually without putting students, staff and faculty members to inconvenience. Progress will be closely monitored in the first week for a smooth transition from the existing system to the new one. Students and faculty members will act as facilitators," PEC director Manoj Datta said.

Meanwhile, temporary parking spaces have been created for students. Parking for two-wheelers of students is along the outer boundary wall of the institute between gate numbers 1 and 2. For the purpose, all two-wheelers of students will move in and out of campus through gate number 1 only. Parking for four-wheelers of students is in the area next to the basketball court near the rail engine. All four-wheelers of students will move in and out of campus through gate number 3 only.

To begin with, parking will be free, there will be no tokens. Two security guards will help ensure orderly parking of vehicles. The token system is likely to start in Phase-2.

A drop off and pick up point has been designated near Gate No 2 on the main road for students who are dropped and picked up by parents and guardians.

Students have been apprised about this through the information circular issued before the date of implementation.
